Volcanic Soda

Preparation: Diet soda pop; a roll of Mentos® ments; a plastic, metal, or rolled paper tube (the tube should be about the size of the mouth of the soda pop bottle); a large area (preferably outside)

Performance: Fill a tube full of Mentos®. Open the bottle of soda pop and place it on the ground or on a sturdy surface. Quickly drop the Mentos® into the soda pop through the tube and move out of the way. The soda pop will erupt like a fountain into the air several feet.

Explanation: Carbon dioxide (with great pressure) is pumped into soda bottles at the factory. The gas (carbon dioxide) is suspended in the soda pop until you open the bottle. When you open a bottle of soda pop, a little of the gas is released. Mentos® have tiny pores or pits in them. The pits are perfect places for the carbon dioxide bubbles to form upon. When the Mentos® fall into the soda, they sink to the bottom of the bottle. Soon the gas is released, and the liquid is forced out of the bottle in an amazing blast.
