Reaching the Children © 2010
Our goal in working with children should be to make God's truth so clear that the children cannot possibly miss it. To do this it will require preparation on your part. The words you say can either confuse the child or make things clearer.
We must find the BEST method in using our words with children. Keep the cookies on the lower shelf so every one can get some.
1.FIND YOUR KEY WORDS
You must find your key words that you use most often: BELIEVE, RECEIVE, SALVATION, HEAVEN, HELL, FAITH, ETERNAL LIFE, BORN AGAIN, REPENT, etc. How would you explain these words? How would you illustrate these words?
2.KEEP IT SIMPLE
Give plenty of definitions. Use stories to illustrate. Kids really like it when you tell a story about yourself or someone they know. If the child doesn't understand what we are saying then WE are not keeping it simple.
3.USE THEIR VOCABULARY
You must remember they are children. If you're teaching 8 year olds then they have only been on earth for 8 years.
4.ASK QUESTIONS
Try to ask questions that will require better answers than "yes" or "no". Asking questions will help clarify any confusion to the rest of the children. You MUST know if the child understands what you are saying.
5.ASSUME NOTHING
Just because the child nods their head or keeps their attention on you does NOT mean they understand. Don't keep teaching without making sure they understand what you are saying.
